COVID-19 Update for Our Food Community

Now more than ever is the time to support local producers. I feel comforted knowing I can sustain and nourish my family and friends with food grown and made by people I have come to know personally here on the East End of Long Island. We all care deeply about nourishing our communities, and you can rest assured we are taking precautions to keep you healthy and safe.

You may have questions or concerns about the recent news surrounding COVID-19 and how it affects the local food system, especially our operations here on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. First, a note of reassurance... According to the CDC’s analysis, “Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food… there is likely a very low risk of spread from food products or packaging.” We encourage you to visit the COVID-19 page to stay informed.

Please see below for some answers to questions we are receiving lately, and feel free to reach out if I can clarify any other questions or concerns.

Is your cafe open for lunch?

Due to cancellations of many classes and campus events, we will be closing the cafe until March 31st at the earliest. Follow @eastendfood or check our website for updates.

Are you providing food for the quarantined students on campus?

No. We are NOT in any way involved in providing services to the students under precautionary quarantine here on campus after their return from Stony Brook University programs overseas.

Are food producers still able to use the kitchen?

Our commercial kitchen remains open for use by food producers and all authorized personnel must show a Stony Brook University ID badge to get into campus. Our team has been cleaning and sanitizing surfaces with even more frequency than usual. As always, food safety protocols remain in place and we encourage frequent hand washing, wearing gloves, and for anyone feeling unwell to stay home.

Will the Riverhead Farmers Market remain open?

With the Federal government ban on gatherings larger than 50 people, it is likely we will need to close the Riverhead Market for the remainder of the season.

This was a difficult decision, and one that we do not take lightly, but we feel that it is in the best interest of our vendors and customers. Our team is researching other ways to support the local food community and we will share information as it becomes available.

HOME DELIVERY OPTION: many market vendors are willing to do home delivery for customers that request it. Visit for more information.

Thank you for your support during this time. We are looking forward to the season ahead, and the wonderful bounty that will soon be available from our local farms. Until then, stay healthy!
